Thursday Thoughts

It's my last Thursday before summer, and so today you get one BIG Thursday Thought. Hopefully I don't come off as kind of a prickly b, but there's something I have to get off my chest.

I've been a school librarian for something like a dozen years now, and every year about this time people start asking me, "So, are you packing up all those books yet?"

Sigh. It's one of those innocent questions asked by people who don't really understand the logistics of the situation, but after twelve years of getting the same question about 10 times in the same month it gets very hard not to say something like -

"Yes, it's very hard work to pack up 11,000 books, ship them to our offshore Cayman Island storage facilities, wait three months, then ship them back into the country, unpack them, and put them all back onto the shelves according to Dewey. Really it's a miracle we manage it every year. It's funny though, you'd think with an entire room full of bookshelves we'd just keep them there over the summer, right? Where better to store books than bookshelves. Geez, wish I woulda thought of that before now."

Mindy, you have to explain this further! Please! Why do they want you to pack up the books? I feel like I'm missing something. Maybe I'm tired, but really, you don't pack up your entire school library, do you?
My school librarian would have heads on platters if the suggestion was ever made, but you have me intrigued! Please tell me more! : )

Lol! People love to say stupid stuff. I used to work for a large supermarket chain and every other customer thought they were being witty when quoting the supermarket's advertising slogan.

Seriously?

Have these people ever been to a library?

Next time tell them you have to bring them home. Even had to add an extra room to your house to store them all.

Oh how hard it must be to keep your mouth shut.

Wow, seriously?! That thought never even occurred to me before. Books live in libraries. That is their home. I guess there really IS such a thing as a dumb question...

People scare me sometimes. o.O

EA - Ha! No, we really don't. It's just that an alarmingly high number of people seem to think that we *do* an the logistics... oh man. I actually DID have to do that once, when we were under construction. Was that ever a job.

Hayley - You should've acted totally starstruck everytime you heard it and said, "Wow! That's so awesome! The store should like, use that, or something! Did you write it?"

Suzi - Sometimes, I admit... I just can't.

Sarah - Oh yes. I have a mini-poster on my office door that says, "There are no stupid questions, but there are a lot of inquisitive idiots."

RC - ; )

Put a sign up sheet for people to help you pack up. It'll be a doofus magnet.
