Book Talk & Giveaway: THE CAT KING OF HAVANA by Tom Crosshill

My book talks are coming at you from a librarian, not a reviewer. You won't find me talking about style or craft, why I think this could've been better or what worked or didn't work. I only do book talks on books I liked and want other people to know about. So if it's here I probably think it won't injure your brain if you read it.

Rick might have a few thousand slugged away from his cat-video content aggregator site, but that doesn't make him cool with the ladies, oddly. After a breakup he meets Ana, a girl who can dance salsa like nobody's business... and its definitely not his business, even if he is half-Cuban. Determined to make an impression, Rick takes some classes.

And while the classes help, he's pretty sure he's still flying under Ana's romance radar, even if they re becoming friends. When the aunt he's never met calls from Cuba to invite him to visit them in Havana, Rick isn't totally in love with the idea of returning to his deceased mother's homeland - after all, she never wanted to talk about it.

But the trip would coincide nicely with Ana's own family crisis, and if he can convince her to get on a plane with him what other magic might come about in Havana? Armed with clunky part white-guy moves and leaving behind plenty of instructions for his cat-loving site moderators, Rick gets on a plane for Cuba, alongside his would-be girlfriend.

They quickly learn that there's two sides of Cuba - the tourist-aimed side that only plays music from The Buena Vista Social Club and hosts dance contests that a sleepy kitten could win - and the other side, where buildings collapse and Rick's cousin's friend can be kidnapped off the street in broad daylight for a blog she runs.

I'm really curious how the author came up with that book title.
